That's certainly not the heading an archivist wants to read. Yesterday, I went into the basement of old St. Paul's and found water along the outside wall. The basement has virtually no air circulation, and with the heat the way it's been lately, we're just asking for mold. Thankfully no records have been seriously damaged from the water or poor ventilation. It will take me some time to go through everything to make sure there was no damage.
Back in March (follow the link), the basement of old St. Paul's became a temporary backup storage after a water leak and mold scare in the rectory basement forced us to move the archives next door. Due to the new water leak, we had no choice but to move them right back to the rectory basement today. Thankfully, the hole in the basement ceiling and drain have been repaired. The next step is to remove the furniture from the basement and either keep the room as storage or renovate and turn that into the archives and reference room. Thank you to Jerry Frazier for helping me move boxes and shelving units.
Below are two photos of EDEO's storage rooms that I took on my first visit to the archives in September 2013.The photo on the left is the basement of the house (rectory) next to old St. Paul's. The photo on the right is the basement of old St. Paul's. Both rooms are what you would expect of most basement storage rooms, musty with poor ventilation, no hvac, and very little light.
