Here is a photo from Bishop Remington's travel journal. St. Mark's Church in Hood River, Oregon -- featured here around 1930 -- used to have a rectory next door. You can see a portion of it in this photo to the right, behind the three gentlemen. Strangely enough, I have not yet found an actual photo of the rectory in either St. Mark's or the diocese's collection; instead we have faint glimpses of the house. St. Mark's Church office has a photo on display showing part of the garage. The rectory burned down in 1961; the church parking lot eventually replaced the building. According to Bishop Barton's journal from the Oregon Trail Churchman in June, 1961,"The Rectory at Hood River went "up in smoke" May 31st! But there is enough of it left that it will probably be rebuilt on the same site. No one was hurt (happened at 1:30 p.m.), but a lot of property damaged (well covered by insurance!). The Rector at Hood River is the former Fire Chief of the Canyon City Fire Department!". Does anyone know what caused the fire? Let me know if you find any photos of the old house.

About the History's Mysteries Page
Historical mysteries are all around us. On this page, we'll focus on primary and secondary source evidence to examine cultural and historical shifts throughout the EDEO. Feel free to leave comments, questions or ideas on the mysteries and questions you find here. You will notice that not all entries are mysteries, but rather questions which lead to new insights on the diocese. Our goal here is to honor the practice of historiography.
