The image above displays the interior of one of the Missionary District of Eastern Oregon's chapels. Taken by Bp. Remington, the image documents and honors the arrival of the Rev. John Pickells (see image below) in the fall of 1929. Here is a excerpt from Bp Remington's diary in September, 1929: "After a long and somewhat arduous trip across the continent in their new Ford, The Rev. and Mrs. John L. Pickells arrived at the Bishop's house in Pendleton, where they were hospitably entertained by Miss Robertson in our absence. We understand the young couple negotiated several difficult mountain climbs on their way. They had evidently caught the "Pike's Peak or bust" spirit before they reached Eastern Oregon" (Oregon Trail Churchman, 1929). Your tasks for this month: name the parish and city this chapel was located in, and tell us a little something about the Rev. Pickells.

About the History's Mysteries Page
Historical mysteries are all around us. On this page, we'll focus on primary and secondary source evidence to examine cultural and historical shifts throughout the EDEO. Feel free to leave comments, questions or ideas on the mysteries and questions you find here. You will notice that not all entries are mysteries, but rather questions which lead to new insights on the diocese. Our goal here is to honor the practice of historiography. The images and content on this website are the property of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon (unless otherwise noted) and cannot be used without permission. About the AuthorMy name is Matt Carmichael, Archivist and Historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon (2013-2016).
